The young man in these photos is my former student Jesse Garcia. On the first day of school I asked him to tell me what his goal was, he replied without hesitation, “graduate from high school and do something good with my life.” I was a bit skeptical to say the least. Jesse had built quite a reputation as a “problem child,” and had been thrown out of a number of schools over the years. Our school and more specifically, my class, was his final chance to shape up and finish school. Jesse quickly erased any anxiety I might have had and proved the reputation that preceded him was an inaccurate portrayal of who he truly was. He wasn’t a trouble maker, never showed signs of aggression and was one of the most kind and respectful young men I’ve ever encountered. He was determined to succeed and worked tirelessly to complete his remaining courses. His hard work paid off, as he exceeded his original goal by graduating three months ahead of schedule! In June, Jesse walked with his graduating class, proving that it’s never too late to make a change if you have the desire and work ethic to make it happen. Tragically, Jesse lost his life last weekend to the senseless gun violence that claims far too many of our young people. His funeral was this morning and his mother spoke of the kindhearted, beautiful, smiling boy that he was and that’s how I’ll remember him, always laughing, joking and enjoying life. Love you, Jesse!!!! Rest in Paradise!!!
