There Were False Prophets 2 Peter 2:1-6 Today, false teachers accomplish Satans work within the context of the church, just as the false prophets of old perverted the right ways of the Lord in the Old Testament times. As then, so now the Lords faithful servants have the solemn obligation to warn the unwary and to awaken the indifferent concerning the pernicious (deadly, ruinous) ways of these wicked deceivers (v.2). Those who trifle with error or accommodate the errant will surely pay the price for their compromise! There were false prophets also among the people...(v.1a). This phrase looks back to the perilous opposition to the will of God that occurred in former dispensations. The apostasy of the angels in the beginning resulted because they believed Lucifers lie and questioned Gods Word (v.4). The world in Noahs day scorned Gods righteousness and held to the satanic delusion that they could disregard the Word of God spoken by Noah and not suffer divine wrath as a result (v.5). Gods view of Sodom and Gomorrhas sin was abundantly plain (v.6). The wages of sin is death (Rom.6:23). All who reject Gods salvation through Jesus will experience this terrible fate. But notice, in particular, the terrible loss that Lot-a just man-suffered as a result of his identification with those who were traversing the devils path (vv.7-8). He lost all of his worldly possessions in Sodom and was saved so as by fire (1 Cor.3:13-15). Believers today can fall for this deadly deception of Satan, too, and find themselves suffering loss of reward because of their compromised fellowships and identification with error. The Bible gives us ample warning, so let us take heed. DWC
