There are a lot of charter schools opening catering to the special needs students, when this was not the case a few years ago. There were schools for students with Autism, but because I remember Larc Lane School, when it closed down, that its closing left a lot of families stuck out on a limb. It is as much difficult for a teacher to instruct "typical" students integrated with students who have an IEP as it is for students with developmental disabilities to learn in an environment not suited for them, specifically. Some parents may argue they want their special needs child to be in a "main stream" class room because it pushes them to learn more, but that is not the case for every student with special needs. Things like that should continue to be handled in a case by case manner as opposed to lumping everyone together. Perhaps is TPS took one of the buildings not in use or (in the event another new school is going to be built) quite possibly they would consider opening a school for individuals with developmental disabilities for those students who truly need an alternative setting and for parents who feel their child needs that individualized education option. Then maybe enrollment may change. Because there are a lot of charter schools, but some offer one thing and others do not. Some have lunches and some have tutoring; some provide transportation and some have state of the art equipment and learning tools, very few, if any offer all the above, so it is a toss up for parents who have no transportation, or assistance with food, but have to provide meals. etc...just my comments on this article by Geoyce Chatman. I am enjoying her column on Examiner
