There are millions of dogs and cats roaming Chilean streets - TopicsExpress

There are millions of dogs and cats roaming Chilean streets completely unsupervised. Here, and in many Latin American countries, there is a very different kind of bond between owners and their pets than what we are used to in North America. Owners love their pets, but tend to have a much lower sense of responsibility for animals’ well-being. Imagine the problems that arise in these communities when so many animals are free to do as they please. There are an average of 26 million dog-inflicted bites and attacks per year toward people (especially children) One of the highest incidences of human hydatid disease cases in the world (transmissible dog parasite) Countless livestock and wildlife attacks and deaths Many lower income people lack access to responsible pet care education, and cannot afford the type of preventive veterinary care which forms the cornerstone for keeping animals healthy. Routine veterinary care increases the rapport between owners and veterinarians, enhances animal well-being and reduces the costs, not to mention the family heartache, when preventable and serious diseases are diagnosed at an early stage. Providing equal access to basic knowledge and veterinary care for all demographics is critical in controlling diseases, improving public health and increasing animal welfare. The GAAP Clinic is a not-for-profit clinic where we focus on preventive medicine. Our philosophy is to keep pets healthy, but also to teach their owners about the importance of preventing disease, injury, and illness rather than focusing on treatment when animals are already sick. The GAAP staff and the families and pets benefiting from our services send a very special thank you to the Humane Society International (hsi.org) for helping us equip the clinic! If you would like to help families and their animals at the GAAP Clinic, please visit thegaap.org/donate/ or contact us directly at [email protected].
