There are some people who are truly called to teach, and then there are the rest of us. Coach John McCabe was one of those teachers who touched so many lives, every single day. Even if you didnt have him as a teacher at Abilene High, he was a person that truly brought light and life to the school. During passing periods we would hear is voice singing Hes got the whole world in his hands and he had so many McCabisms that became a part of our daily lives: Its a great day to be an Eagle! Put that in your big Chief tablet to name a few. My first year at AHS Mr. Curtis wisely teamed me with him to teach a basic class that had numerous SpEd kids. He took me under his wing and taught me SO much. His patience was infinite! I never saw him loose his cool or become angry. That was the year that I met Anthony, and he was doing his student teaching at AHS. I didnt know how people would see our relationship and Coach McCabe was the first person to whom I confided. He reassured me that people would see both of us as good people who were fond of one another and that if we fell in love they would be happy for us. He said Anthony was a fine young man with a fine reputation that was going to make a good coach and even though he thought Anthony was lucky to get me, he thought I was very lucky to get him! Coach McCabe loved teaching and coaching but he loved his bride Dana more than anyone I ever saw. When she became ill he truly fulfilled the vow of in sickness and health and took good care of her. The world has lost a true gentleman and gentle man.
