There could be a nasty showdown between supporters of the governing and main opposition parties in the Ashanti regional capital within the next 24 hours. Reports reaching XYZ News from our regional correspondent Isaac Bediako Justice suggest hordes of supporters of the two parties have massed up at the Kumasi Airport waiting for President John Mahama’s arrival for Sunday’s crowning celebration of Asante Monarch Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s 15th anniversary on the throne. The opposition supporters, according to Bediako, are at the Airport purposefully to hoot at President Mahama when he disembarks from his flight. Their intended action is in protest to the President’s alleged ethno-political slur against Ashantis as ingrates, who will never appreciate his government’s efforts even if he gilded their roads. On the flipside, the supporters of the governing party are swarming at the Airport to ensure their opponents don’t achieve their aim. Bediako reports that there could be possible clashes between the two parties if the security agencies don’t intervene to avert possible bloodbath. Alleged insulting comments made by the President against Ashantis when he visited the region last week is the reason for the heightening tensions between the two parties. The Presidency claims his speech was doctored for mischief but the opposition insists the President did insult Ashantis - Radio XYZ 93.1FM
