There could be no better adjective to depict the current status of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) other than ‘USELESS’. Yes, useless is the most fitting description for the SLPP especially when one chooses to be moderate to define the party that is supposed to be the ‘mother of political parties’ in Sierra Leone. Whether the useless state of the SLPP is due to frustration of being in opposition is another argument altogether. But one thing that is certain is the fact that other political parties have been in opposition in Sierra Leone for eleven years and longer, but never deteriorated to a state of plain madness. As it is right now, the SLPP has lost it. Instead of mapping out serious strategies to promote itself from opposition to ruling class, or at least serve as an opposition to reckon with, or an opposition that can contribute to national development by literally forcing the ruling class to do better, the SLPP members and supporters are busy killing themselves over who should be in charge of what. If today the SLPP members and supporters are not verbally abusing each other in public in broad daylight, tomorrow they would be engaged in street battles among themselves and with security forces. Like the ordinary members and supporters, the most disappointing aspect of this drama is that those charged with the responsibility of guiding and safeguarding the interest of the party are the very ones behaving like kindergarten pupils. In summary, the SLPP is infected with power thirty individuals who only care for their individual power ambitions, at the expense of peace, unity and progress of the party. With this reality, the party will not only continue to remain in opposition for as long as it takes for these leaders in the SLPP to grow up and wise up (which seems very impossible), but will continue to sink to oblivion, if not extinction. Instead of putting the ruling class (which prefers the current one-party-state like scenario currently in Sierra Leone) on its toes to fight the deadly ebola virus that has and continues to kill citizens in the SLPP stronghold of Kailahun, the SLPP leadership is busy fighting itself over impeachment of the party leader and secretary general. This is very unfortunate. The opposition is supposed to appear as an alternative government. But the SLPP is more of a boys and girls social club than an opposition party. No wonder the ruling party is just so comfortable to treat the citizens with utter contempt. Shame on the SLPP for failing the people of Sierra Leone so badly; and shame on the ruling party for reneging on its promise to ‘do more’ for the people of Sierra Leone.
