There has been much debate recently regarding the EcoSolutions Township Owl project. There have been voices on social media and in the press explaining how owls dont belong in Townships or owls dont occur in Townships or even Townships are not a suitable habitat for owls. We do not agree. In the last week we have spent some time visiting abandoned buildings in the Katlehong Township, East of Johannesburg. We have visited 60 abandoned houses and found Barn owl (Tyto alba) activity in 35% (n21) of them. The pictures below help to illustrate how we determine owl activity. We havent visited these sites at night yet, but over the months ahead we intend to. We also intend to collect and analysis the owl pellets at these sites. This pellet analysis will provide valuable information relating to the total number of rodents consumed as a consequence of these 21 sites. If there are any of our members who would like to participate in these nocturnal owl surveys, please inbox me.
