There is a current debate about political gangsterism. Please allow me to contribute some insights from chess. But before I do that let me say this. When we are confident of our abilities there is no need for gangsterism or belligerence or anger. That behaviour comes when we feel we are helpless or victims. An aside: When the businessman is confident of succeeding he build his business. When he is not, he robs his own company. When I first entered into the chess scene, I noticed this. Our players did not train before they went out to compete Internationally. So I brought in training by hiring a Grandmaster to train our National Juniors. This act brought on intense attacks by some parties. Then I trained some Juniors to compete for a place on the senior squad. This also brought on intense attacks. I suggested applying competitor analysis to measure the skill gap between us and our neighbours and this was rebuffed. What I noticed was the intensity of the reactions did not commensurate with the attempts to improve. I then realised that those acts disturbed the self delusions of the attackers. They did not want to improve, to measure the gaps or to train. Why? They needed something or someone to blame. Let me explain further. My actions touched on their fears. The deep seated fear that they cannot compete. For when you compete you need to have confidence that you can succeed. An aside: Some people think that it is merely a way of presentation. That somehow if we can present without touching on sensitivities the ideas can be well received. Actually no. Those sensitivities are put in place so that their inadequacies cannot be visited. Their fears cannot be confronted for really they have lost their confidence. Whisper the solutions and the reactions will also be anger, belligerence. Political gangsterism. That is the origin. The lack of confidence. It has been bleached away. They will not allow reasoning for that will mean that they have to visit their fears in search of a solution.
