There is a lot of functionality baked into the firmware of the Olympus OMD EM-1 that I primarily shoot with these days. One of these is the ability to create time-lapse movies. I had not had an opportunity to play around with this before, but when I checked into the hotel at Bangkok and saw my 11th floor view I knew it was time to try this out. About an hour before sunrise I squeezed through the window and set up the tripod on the balcony (which really wasn’t meant to be used by people as the railing only came up to around my knees, not to mention the window only “sort of” opened up wide enough to squeeze through) and framed the shot. This ended up being a sequence of 150 shots with one taken every 30 seconds. The camera was set on Aperture Priority at F11 and started out with a shutter speed of around 20 seconds per image and as the sun came up the speed continually increased and ended at a 125th. The camera body compiled the images and created this final movie as an AVI file. While this isn’t bad for my very first time-lapse effort, it’s obvious that I have a lot to learn! I look forward to trying this out with other subjects when it works out in the future.
