Following our Veterans Day march up Fifth Avenue in New York City - TopicsExpress

Following our Veterans Day march up Fifth Avenue in New York City in full Service Dress Blues and in the company of a USA(R) Colonel (R. Wood), we made the decision to check out the new USS New York (LPD-21) Amphibious Assault Ship which was in port. Wearing our dress uniforms, we got the grand treatment including a personal tour of all areas of the ship including the CIC (Combat Information Center) the Well Deck where I boarded my first LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion), the Officers Mess and MANY other sensitive areas of the ship. Just previous to our departure, the Duty OOD gave Colonel Wood the option of piping him ashore. As an Army Colonel, he had no idea what that meant. After I explained to him and with his approval, The OOD (Officer of the Deck) followed suit with a broadcast throughout all decks of the ship: DING DING, DING DING COLONEL WOOD US ARMY DEPARTING DING DING, DING DING I thought it was a nice touch to end the evening that way. Well worth the trip!
