There is a whole category of complaint and despair related to people being buried in their phones and ignoring the real world. This attitude is not developmental. Its completely useless and obscures the real work that needs to be done, which is to prove that the real world is worth paying attention to. One thing that I think causes this dissociation is the separation of art and the aesthetic experience from everyday life. Anybody who knows John Deweys work automatically agrees with this. What Dewey didnt expect is that we would find a way to introduce art to the everyday at the expense of our presence IRL. I can more easily look at more art, witty jokes, well argued articles, participate in more interesting and inspiring and worthwhile conversations on my phone or on the internet in 30 minutes than I can see or participate in IRL in 3 months. So? What are we going to do about that? How can we demonstrate adequately that real life is worth it? We have to DO, MAKE, ENGAGE, COMMUNICATE, CONNECT, and EXPRESS TRUTH AND BEAUTY IN REAL LIFE to fix this imbalance, not fall into cynicism and despair- an excuse not to act which is beyond shameful. We like to call the physical world real life but the ability to express and connect on the internet that many people experience is much more real. Shaming people for not getting value from a world where you have to fly to France to pay more money to even get into the good museums where they lock up the art!???!!! What are we doing? What are we doing?
