There is little doubt that the rudimentary nature of anarchist collectivism as propagated by unsophisticated agitators was well adapted to the social psychology of illiterate peasants who were capable of great outbursts of enthusiasm but lacked tenacity to pursue complex social endeavours. The messianic notion of the revolutionary repartition - even though peasant understanding of it rarely approximated Bakuninist orthodoxy - was much more satisfying emotionally than tedious Marxist teachings of slow economic transformation. Anarchist agitation seemed to suggest that little more was needed to inaugurate the millennium than syndical and farm labours strike.
