There is still racial animosity and pockets of racism in our country. I have personally experienced it from time to time. Granted. It is, in my view, episodic and non-pervasive. It is not structural and institutional in any comprehensive fashion. The real question is whether or not these remaining racial factors are a main reason to keep minorities in poverty and want. Are minorities able to move forward in life on the present social conditions? The answer to the first question is no and for the second it is yes. The main reason for poverty in America, within every racial or ethnic group, is the rupture of the traditional family. The brokenness if the family affects other important areas such as education and opportunity. The main reason for so many minorities still upholding the idea that racism is the main culprit is the commitment of the main leaders and organizations in minority America to that idea. I have no doubt that if the majority of the main leaders and organizations purporting to defend minorities began to offer a different outlook, that new attitude would have a dramatic positive effect among minorities. For long in the history of our country minorities looked up to the pillars in their communities for direction. Whether it was blacks finding solace and support in the face of outright societal oppression and racial discrimination or the history of caudillismo among Latin Americans, there has always been a trend of bonding together in a common cause, led by our leaders. Commonality made sense in the presence of real and pervasive societal constraints. Yet, today, commonality has become a hindrance. The greatest betrayal of minority advancement lay on the hands of leaders who refuse to see meaningful progress and are invested in an us against them stance. Commonality with such leadership is not what we need. The final and most important chapter in the history of civil rights is not claiming any other rights tying us more to the state or to these leaders. The greatest chapter is reclaiming our individuality.
