There must be some sort of entropy thing happening. The quality of anything you can get now is way down on what it used to be. Im not talking about the shitty Chinese-made tools here, which snap and bend with the slightest pressure. Or the shoddy goods imported for sale to us long-suffering customers by Ace Hardware. Im not even referring to that insidious corporate practice of deliberate obsolescence designed to make goods fail one day, two hours, six minutes and 25 seconds after the warranty expires. Have you noticed that the thickness of a powder coating, or paint layer, or plastic veneer has dropped to 25% of what it used to be? The formulas used for Western-branded shampoos, conditioners and other cosmetics in Bali are but pale shadows of the versions sold in Australia. Try them for yourself - there is no contest. So it bothers me that stuff we use here to protect ourselves - like fly and mosquito sprays - have become truly shitful. Take my favourite Baygon product for example. Before, when sprayed into a room for 5 seconds, it would INSTANTLY kill every single Chikungunya-carrying and Dengue-toting mosquito in the house. Not even a leg twitch would betray that the blood-sucking little killers were ever alive. Now when I spray, the mosquitoes fly through the aerosol cloud, say Nyam-nyam!, lick their little probosci and circle back for another shot. The Baygon now seems to have the same effect as scotch whisky does on me. Oh, itll kill me eventually, but nothing fatal is happening in the short term. So why is that? Have the corporate giants simply stopped putting poisons into our mosquito sprays because we are too stupid to notice the difference? Are local packagers of this stuff ripping us off because, you know, its like EXPENSIVE to use real poisons? Or have the do-gooders finally triumphed and convinced manufacturers that putting poison into a product designed to kill something is just so cruel and barbaric that it must be stopped? Who knows? It could be something as simple as a developing resistance by some mosquito species to the killer chemicals used. Lift your game, Monsanto, if thats who you are. In any event, its yet another example of the progressive crapification of everything you buy here. Those of you who are buying condoms should be very, very careful.
