There seems to be debate about where and how the term Redskin came - TopicsExpress

There seems to be debate about where and how the term Redskin came into being, but heres something there is no doubt about: Bounty hunters who were paid to kill Native Americans needed proof of their kill, and didnt have a way to carry bodies. Instead, they were paid for Redskins i.e. the scalps or genitals of dead Natives. The term recalls a time when the ancestors of many American citizens were tortured, re-educated, forced from their homes, and mass murdered. An 1871 novel spoke of redskinned devils. The Rocky Mountain News in 1890 described a war on the whites by every greasy redskin. The Denver Daily News the same year reported a rebellion by the most treacherous red skins.* If you think that the history of a professional sports team trumps this, Im not sure what to say to you. Im glad about todays ruling by the patent office, and embarrassed that fans and owners clung to an antiquated slur until govt acted to bring about a change.
