There should be a limit to the vote bank politics. The petty vote - TopicsExpress

There should be a limit to the vote bank politics. The petty vote bank consideration should not be allowed to take over the foreign policy. Indian PM did not boycott the meeting with Nawaz Sharif even at the face of grave provocations by Pakistan in the form of ceasefire violations across the border and LOC, barbaric treatment given to our soldiers like cutting off their heads, limbs etc. Why is he then boycotting CHOGM at Colombo? Is he scared of adverse impact on his election prospects in 2014 as he is afraid that Tamil voters would vote against Congress or DMK might withdraw its support this time for local political constraints? There was no such fear with reference to the atrocities committed by Pak on Indian soldiers. Indian soldiers cannot pose any electoral threat to Congress. Hence why bother about them? PM can enjoy biryani with Pak PM but will boycott CHOGM as he cannot afford political backlash! Secondly, this also reveals a dangerous mind set of the Indian Politicians. They unfortunately identify each issue with local/regional blocks or religion, howsoever irrelevant it may be. Congress/UPA is soft on terror because they think any action against terrorists would drive away Muslims from Congress/UPA and some new born secular parties. So they make some irresponsible statements on terrorism, batla house encounter and even refer Osama as ‘Osamaji’! This thinking is fallacious and demeaning for the entire Muslim community as it is bracketed with terrorists by the Congress/UPA itself. Similarly, some event in Sri Lanka concerning human rights violations committed by Sri Lankan Army against Tamil Rebels or Sri Lankan Tamil in Sri Lanka is perceived as violation of dignity of Indian Tamils! So boycott CHOGM to please regional parties like DMK/AIADMK and Tamil ministers in the cabinet. This is simply myopic and immature polity.
