There was a time when pointing out mistakes to professionals at newspapers or magazines elicited genuine embarrassment. They were appalled when mistakes made it into their stories. Today, news of those mistakes typically gets a shrug of resignation at best, if the writers even notice. They don’t seem to care much. Fixing things is such a bother. Their editors don’t much care. The people who own the publications don’t much care. Most of the readers don’t care at all. So why should they care? The complete lack of pride in such writing is very painful for me as I watch it get worse.
