There was an interestimg interview my friend had me listen to the other day by Pauly Shore. In light of the Hollywood tribute to Robin Williams, He interviewed one of Robins’ best friends, Rick Overton. They have been friends for over 32 years – his entire career days –and he talked about alot of different Robin stuff...including some of the myths & guesses about what may have pushed Robin to the edge. And that’s the point…they are myths and guesses. Nobody knows what was in his mind those final moments except Robin, and the fact is that he may not have even known. The person who killed Robin Williams was NOT Robin Williams. Not the loving, kind, caring, joking, tornado mind, can’t keep him in one place for long Robin Williams he was known as by everyone including his family and friends. Rick was with him on a daily basis before AND after his surgery. He saw and watched him live with the daily high and low points after open heart surgery. As times goes on, they either get better or worse. Statistically, in 40% of people, they get worse. They take medication daily to keep from rejecting new parts, and for pain after screwing your breast plate back together, and for prevention of heart disease. Lots of medications everyday for the rest of your life! I know all this to be true as I have lived with someone close to me who went through the same things. When you have open heart surgery, they literally stop your heart – remove it from your body – attached new valves – put it back in your body – restart it. Sometimes when it is restarted everything does not load right but you don’t know it right away so there is no way of fixing it. For example…It’s not like when you turn on your computer and it doesn’t load everything right so you turn it off and restart it again to get everything firing and working the way it should. So as time goes on these things that suddenly aren’t loading right in your body start to change you, your personality. A person who is outgoing and always on the go, suddenly starts to slow down, lose interest in regular daily things, suffer from depression. But you keep trucking on, taking your medications that literally are a catalyst to the issues caused with stopping your heart in the first place…causing you to slip into this depressed state. Heart surgery alone statistically causes 60% of people to suffer depression, 40% to suffer with suicidal tendencies and 30% to actually follow through with them. That is a HUGE number. So on top of all the heart medications now he got antidepressants. Chemical upon chemical. Lovely. I don’t think anyone could have known, because he never said anything to anyone so nobody could have helped or stopped it from creeping in. He noticed that he got more quiet and self contained. His phone conversations and his texts were getting shorter. So a point Rick was trying to drive home was that people should stop trying to blame any one thing. He said he wasn’t sad and depressed because his show was cancelled – Robin has been through stuff like that before – movies not being big hits etc. He had lots of things he was currently working on and stuff he was planning for in the future. He wasn’t suffering from money issues. He was a super star, he had everything he wanted at his fingertips. He has a beautiful loving caring wife, awesome children and tons of friends. He thinks that out of all the amazing voices and personalities he had in him, there was one that started talking smack and he listened to that one instead. One other thing that I found very insightful into who Robin Williams was, was that he never thought of himself as “the greatest” or anything or even as a super star, he said he was just doing what came naturally to him. He said that most of the time he was just trying to do better than the last joke, better than the last character in a movie. Hmmm. Who would have thought? He also mentioned that when they were out just walking, riding or doing whatever and people came up to him to get a picture he always made sure that everyone got a picture – he would turn to all the angles where there was someone with a camera. He even made sure that the person with the camera got a picture of themselves with him. He said he didn’t care how long it took, he just did it. I thank the good Lord above for giving him to us on this earth for the time we had him. He brightened a lot of lives with laughter, joy and wonder. May he Rest in Peace & suffer no more. Sorry this ended up being so long, I just wanted to share. it was a live interview and if I can figure out how to post it here I will.
