Theres a demo in Glasgow this saturday (12th) which people in this group may be interested in. Its not to do with independence but will undoubtedly affect Scotland whether we get independence or not. If we did, and this trade deal was passed, it would be the shittiest start to our independence imaginable - and thats no exaggeration! Known as TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) it is nothing short of a final assault on democracy by corporate fascists! Youve maybe seen Tory git Owen Paterson all over the news this week claiming hes fighting for Scottish haggis exports? Well thats all to do with this deal. What the BBC didnt mention in their report is that it aligns Europe with the USs much lower standard of regulation for food standards, banking regulation even employment regulation. It also allows corporations the right to sue governments if they ban something or have a law that is not favourable to a corporation. For instance, if Scotland got independence and voted to raise minimum wage, then every corporation could sue the government! This happened in Quebec when the people voted to stop fracking and a fracking company sued the government for $250 million.... of taxpayers money! Scotland also has a ban on GM crops, as it could threaten our wordlwide reputation for quality food and drink (90% of our whisky is exported). But this would definitely be a point of contention for Monsanto and other biotech companies (who Owen Patersons dad is on the payroll of - surprise surprise!) and will undoubtedly see Scotland sued for banning GM! Anyway, a wee video explaining how damaging this TTIP deal could be to our newly won democracy if we dont stop it! Ill post a link to the Glasgow demo in the comments, hope some of you can make it, and let your friends all know too! ethicalconsumer.org/latestnews/entryid/1615/act-now-on-dodgy-trade-deal.aspx
