Theres a difference between being humble and putting up with peoples crap. Most of the time, people confuse being assertive with being arrogant, and being a walk-over with being humble. Theres also this thing of not allowing people to enjoy their own feats, because it is arrogant to do so. When I say Im not going to write an article for R500, the conclusion becomes that Im arrogant. But hold on. Am I supposed to pretend as if I dont know I am actually gifted at writing? Im not supposed to demand what I KNOW Im worth, because it comes across as being arrogant? So I must agree to being short-charged, all in the name of humility? Even worse, I must allow people to raise views that I regard as flawed or at worse, ridiculous, and not challenge them, for fear that if I do, that I wanted to buy your book but now I wont blackmail tactic will be used? Well, Im going to say this and Im going to say it without a flicker of the eye. Im NOT going to suddenly be this sweet person who doesnt challenge views I regard as ridiculous just so my book can sell more copies. Its not going to happen. Call it arrogance or ego or any other name, but I am NOT going to suddenly develop a foreign character because I happen to have a book in stores and Im supposed to appeal to my potential customers by not being offensive. If I am expected to suddenly be Miss Smiley-Face-Who-Wont-Challenge-Ridiculousness for books to fly off the shelves, then lets agree that my book is going to gather dust at bookstores. I was not known for being sweet before MEMOIRS OF A BORN FREE, dont expect me to suddenly be sweet after it. Theres one thing I dont do and thats sucking up for material gains. It wont happen. It is NOT going to happen. Were on the same page, right? Sure. Sharp.
