Theres a short and fascinating documentary on Netflix called Paris is Burning. It deals with trans and gay individuals, mostly men of color in NYC in the 1980s. This clip shows a competition called a ball where competitors try to pass as straight and/or cisgendered. Whats most striking is the way they perceive themselves- to pass well is to erase all the mistakes, all the flaws, all the giveaways. They also hint at how normalized violence is a part of their life- when they can get home and still have all their clothes, and no blood running off their bodies, those are femme realness queens. We can think of trans people being physically attacked as a way society punishes those who dare to go outside the established gender binary.
