Theres this untrue stereotype of cancer patients and survivors. We - TopicsExpress

Theres this untrue stereotype of cancer patients and survivors. We expect them to all be these crazy inspriing individuals who feel blessed for having survived all of this. But most dont feel that way... I know I dont all the time... and Ive been called inspirational I-cant-count-how-many times. In this talk, I let other survivors and patients know that its totally fine if they dont feel that way... its normal. That theyre not ungrateful or weak if they do, but rather theyre stronger for admitting it. Because not only are they more likely to get the help that they need... the only have 1 way to go from there. And thats up. I also talked about how I dealt with the loss of a good friend of mine to this disease, and the depression that ensued after that. So if you know any patients... or anyone whos gone or going through tough times (cause this applies to many things - not just cancer), who seem to be coping... dont just call them a fighter. Dont just praise them for being strong... Ask them, seriously, if theyre OK, and be there for them if they arent.
