There’s a ridiculous set of circumstances at play as South Australia waits to officially find out whether the submarine contract goes to Japan. 1.) There are likely pressures from the US for Australia to engage Japan as a stronger international ally against China; 2.) The argument for a cheaper submarine being a better bang for the taxpayer buck doesn’t take into account the multiplier effect of jobs and skills retained by the workforce; and 3.) Outsourcing our defence to Japanese labour is a massive vote of no confidence in those workers who the Govt represent. We cannot all transition to service jobs and pretend Australia will continue to enjoy a first world lifestyle. There is no market that will deliver Australia a just outcome, but rather it will enshrine the gradual degrading of middle Australia. Industry doesn’t want subsidies – it wants business. If govts cannot invest in the very people who pay taxes then they will end up paying Newstart. Share
