These ABC cuts leave me feeling decidedly uncomfortable because Im conflicted in a variety of ways... Putting aside the semantics of Abbotts foolish pre-election promise which has been shown to be a lie, just like Gillard lied and numerous politicians before them... Would the cuts be fair, reasonable and accepted if it was declared before an election ????Lest we forget Frasers razor gang cut the abc in the 70s, the Hawk govt went after the abc in the 80s after four corners dared go after one of Hawkes corrupt rich mates and howard had an ongoing battle with the abc. At one point abc management sent a memo to staff saying the howard govt is out to get us so follow suit....... So abc / govt conflict is nothing new be it budgetary or ideological..... But Is this a perfect storm... An uncertain Unhealthy economy, substantial govt debt, ( doesnt matter who is to blame) a media landscape that is being completely remodelled before our eyes and an ideological battle between the media opinion makers be they left, right or wavering... From a selfish perspective I love the ABC cause I rarely watch anything else and I have friends who work there so I feel for their uncertain future... But then I ponder whether the ABC should be excluded from the cutbacks and ongoing rationalisation of all companies in Australia, especially media businesss?????..but this latter point is offset by the fact that the ABC does provide extensive services to areas and topics that are not commercially viable.. These are genuine public service pursuits that enhance and enrich our community so how do you judge these activities from the prism of commercial imperatives? ... A classic conundrum whereby everyone is right and and everyone is wrong
