These are some of the narrations of `Aaishah رضي الله عنها in regards to her not being able to make up her missed fasts of Ramadhaan except in Sha`baan of the next year. 1. It is allowed to delay making up the missed fasts of Ramadhaan till the Sha`baan of next year: `Aaishah رضي الله عنها said: “I would owe fasts from Ramadhaan and I would not make them up until Sha`baan came.” [Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (2319) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee] It was narrated that Abu Salamah said: I heard `Aaishah رضي الله عنها say: “I used to owe fasts from the month of Ramadhaan, and I would not make them up for until Sha`baan came.” [Ibn Maajah (1669) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee] ****** 2. As for `Aaishah رضي الله عنها, she said: “ فَمَا أَسْتَطِيعُ ” (I could not…) meaning, she had some excuse for this delay: Narrated `Aaishah رضي الله عنها: “If I had some part of the fast of Ramadhaan to make up, I would not be able to atone for it except in Sha`baan.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (2399) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee] ****** 3. She رضي الله عنها clearly mentioned that this was only during the lifetime of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, which can also mean that it might have happened only once or twice: `Aaishah رضي الله عنها narrated: “I would not make up what was due upon me from Ramadhaan except in Shaban, until the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم died.” [Jaami` al-Tirmidhee (783) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee] ****** 4. Her duties to and with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (like going out on military expeditions with the Prophet or taking care of his needs etc.) were the reasons that she would not get time to make up for the missed fasts except in Sha`baan of the next year: Abu Salamah reported: I heard `Aaishah رضي الله عنها as saying: “I had to complete some of the fasts of Ramadhaan, but I could not do it but during the month of Sha`baan due to my duties to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم or with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1950) and Saheeh Muslim (1146 a) and wordings are his] This Hadeeth is also narrated with the variation that: “(`Aaishah رضي الله عنها did not observe fast but in Sha`baan) out of regard for the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم.” [Saheeh Muslim (1146 b)] In another report it is: “That was because of her status with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.” [Saheeh Muslim (1146 c)] `Aaishah رضي الله عنها reported: “If one amongst us did not fast during the life of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم she would not be able to make it up so long she had been in the presence of Allahs Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم till Sha`baan commenced.” [Saheeh Muslim (1146 e)] It was narrated that `Aaishah رضي الله عنها said: “One of us (women) would miss some fasts in Ramadhaan and she would not be able to make it up until Sha`baan began, and the Messenger of Allaah did not fast in any month as he fasted in Sha`baan; he used to fast all of it, except a little, he used to fast all of it.” [Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (2178)]
