Thieving boy hears voices Staff Reporter Thursday, June 12, 2014 - 09:00 News A father had to hand his son over to the authorities after his thieving ways became unbearable. Hamoolongo Erastus, 54, from Ompanda village of Ongwediva in Oshana Region said his son Erastus Samuel,17, became a problem when he started living with him at his homestead since 2012. “It started with our neighbours’ houses being broken into, with money, clothing and other valuable items being stolen. We never suspected Samuel as the culprit, we always thought it was the work of thieves from outside,” said Erastus. According to Erastus it was only when he was called to the school, Ompanda Combined School where Samuel is a Grade eight learner that he discovered that his son was the culprit. “The school started experiencing break-ins with items such as cell phones that have been confiscated from learners disappearing, money from the tuck shops and the principal’s office. However, when he was caught and was referred to the school counsellor, he confessed that he did not wish to steal but said he always hears voices in his head telling him to steal,” said Erastus. “It has become too much, he started even stealing from our own home. He takes anything, clothing, shoes, money and I discovered that he would always store these items at his mother’s homestead in another village. I had to get him locked up so that maybe he could stop his thieving ways. He has se-veral cases made against him by the school and other people whose items he had stolen from around the village,” adds an obviously distressed Erastus. Samuel was released under the custody of his mother with his case remanded to June 24.
