Think! Posted on May 4, 2013 by theobjectivistobserver “Thinking is man’s only basic virtue, from which all the others proceed. And his basic vice, the source of all his evils, is that nameless act which all of you practice, but struggle never to admit: the act of blanking out, the willful suspension of one’s consciousness, the refusal to think—not blindness, but the refusal to see; not ignorance, but the refusal to know.” Our choices define us. Having a healthy disregard for boundaries is virtuous. Even necessary. Going beyond what appear to be rational limits is often a mark of genius. Many people though take this as an open license to be downright stupid. Having a rational framework and then pushing the limits on it works. A total disregard for logic doesn’t. Life is life every single second. There is no pause button on it, as much as some of us might want to believe there is. Every second counts. Every action counts. And if you are not conscious, and thinking of it every single second – you lose out. “I often think that he’s the only one of us who’s achieved immortality. I don’t mean in the sense of fame and I don’t mean that he won’t die some day. But he’s living it. I think he is what the conception really means. You know how people long to be eternal. But they die with every day that passes. When you meet them, they’re not what you met last. In any given hour, they kill some part of themselves. They change, they deny, they contradict–and they call it growth. At the end there’s nothing left, nothing unreversed or unbetrayed; as if there had never been an entity, only a succession of adjectives fading in and out on an unformed mass. How do they expect a permanence which they have never held for a single moment? But Howard–one can imagine him lasting forever.” The only way to achieve immortality in this sense is to be consistent in your thought process. Not just in the quality of thought, but also the very action of thinking. Don’t blink. Think.
