Think about each person in your life. If there is a negative charge or uncomfortable feeling about anyone, you need to either forgive that person or ask for their forgiveness; or do both. Write a forgiveness journal. Start by forgiving yourself for all your perceived misdeeds. Then offer forgiveness to everyone who you think has troubled you in any way. Remember that as long as you hate or hold a grudge against someone, you are their prisoner. They may not be in touch with you any more, they may have forgotten all about you, they may be dead and gone, but if their thought can make you angry, they have power over you. You do not do any favor to them by forgiving them. You do not become holier than them by this act. You simply set yourself free by your forgiveness. How would you know that you have actually forgiven someone? When you are not obsessed about that person anymore, and can concentrate on other stuff. When you can think or talk about that person without anger, resentment, or aching emotional pain. When talking or thinking about them doesn’t hurt anymore and you don’t feel teary eyed. When instead of either over-eating or starving, you eat normally. When instead of either yelling or sulking, you are yourself once again; that is when the forgiveness is complete. By forgiving, you gain yourself.
