Thinking back to Gandhi amongst brute force and umbrellas: bit.ly/10mp2xS The Hong Kong protests are now widely known as the Umbrella Revolution after last Sunday, when umbrellas were all demonstrators had to protect them from the tear gas. The umbrella has now become a symbol of solidarity with these non-violent protests. Today, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhis birthday, is also the International Day of Non-Violence. Our columnist Lisa Regan remembers Gandhi and how others, from George Orwell to Salman Rushdie, thought of him – and considers just how pertinent his words still are as the world watches how events pan out in Hong Kong.
