Thinking (obsessing) on the ethics of goldfish ownership has led me the age old question of quality of life vs quantity of life and whether its good to die young. If petsmart is telling me that dutifully fulfilling your purpose as food for a life span of a couple months tops is not cruel but being loved and welcomed into a family for up to five years (the length of the last goldfishs life) is cruel.... does that mean that my noncomittal attitude towards a lifelong career and mission is actually cruel self deprivation?
