This Day In History – In 1973, members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) surrendered to federal authorities thereby ending a 71-day standoff at Wounded Knee. The occupation of Wounded Knee by the AIM and its leaders, Russell Means and Dennis Banks, began with the hope that it would force an investigation of other reservations, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and broken Indian treaties.
