This Day in Music History October 19: ON THIS DAY, October 19th: 1845 - Richard Wagners opera Tannhäuser, premiered in Dresden. 1937 - Womans Day magazine was published for the first time. 1944 - The play I Remember Mama, starring Mady Christians, Oscar Homolka, Joan Tetzel, and Marlon Brando in his Broadway debut, opened at New Yorks Music Box Theatre for 713 performances. 1945 - Jeannie C. Riley is born in Anson, Texas. She records Harper Valley P.T.A. as a secretary in 1968 and is immediately launched into public consciousness. The single about suburban hypocrisy sells millions of copies, becoming her signature hit. 1949 - Frankie Laine released the single Mule Train. 1953 - After Julius LaRosa finished his song Manhattan on the CBS Radio Network morning show Arthur Godfrey Time, host Arthur Godfrey fired him on the air saying, Thanks ever so much, Julie. That was Julies swan song with us. At a press conference after the incident became a national scandal, Godfrey claimed that by hiring his own manager, LaRosa had lost his humility. 1955 - The Ames Brothers recorded It Only Hurts For A Little While in New York City. 1956 - Elvis Presley released his second album, Elvis. 1957 - Alan Freeds The Biggest Show of Stars for 1957 concert tour played Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Performers included Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Chuck Berry, Paul Anka, Frankie Lymon, Clyde McPhatter, the Everly Brothers, LaVern Baker, the Drifters, Eddie Cochran, the Bobettes, Buddy Knox, Johnnie & Joe, the Spaniels, and Jimmy Bowen. 1958 - 13-year-old singer Brenda Lee, with a sax solo by Boots Randolph, recorded Rockin Around The Christmas Tree at Owen Bradleys Quonset Hut studio in Nashville. The single was released in 1958 but failed to chart. Re-released in 1960, it rose to No.14 and has since become a Christmas standard, ranked No.4 on the list of All-Time Christmas Songs. 1958 - The singing duo Jan & Arnie guested on The Jack Benny Program on CBS-TV. 1959 - The original Broadway production of the play The Miracle Worker, starring 12-year-old Patty Duke in her Broadway debut, and Anne Bancroft, opened at New Yorks Playhouse Theatre for 719 performances. The two actresses reprised their roles in the 1962 feature film of the same name. 1959 - Florence Henderson joined NBC-TVs Today show. The Today Girl, as she was called on the show, left the program the following year. 1959 - Tommy Facenda, a member of Gene Vincents band, scores his only solo hit when High School USA enters Hot 100 at No. 97. One of the oddest novelty records ever, it was released in dozens of different versions mentioning different high schools for different cities of release. 1961 - At a show in Litherland Town Hall in Liverpool, England, two popular local groups, The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers, combined on stage to form the Beatmakers, performing Jerry Lee Lewis Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On, Whatd I Say?, Red Sails in the Sunset, and Hit the Road, Jack. 1961 - Ray Charles makes the UK chart with Hit the Road Jack 1961 - Helen Shapiro was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with Walkin Back To Happiness. The singers second and final UK No.1. 1962 - Tony Bennett recorded I Wanna Be Around at CBS 30th Street Studio in New York City. 1963 - Buck Owens attains the #1 spot on the Billboard country chart with Loves Gonna Live Here. 1964 - Actor (Private Doberman on The Phil Silvers Show a/k/a Bilko, The Thrill of it All, Teenage Millionaire, Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town) Maurice Gosfield died following a heart attack at age 51. 1966 - The Yardbirds arrived in New York for their first US tour with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on lead guitars. After two dates of the tour, Beck developed acute tonsillitis and quit the group. He would go on to form The Jeff Beck Group, that gave Rod Stewart his first major exposure. 1967 - At EMIs Abbey Road Studios in London, the Beatles added vocals and a guitar overdub to the track they began 17 days earlier under the working title Hello, Hello and later changed to Hello, Goodbye. Capitol Records omitted the comma in the songs title in the packaging of the U.S. single. 1967 - Jose Feliciano recorded Light My Fire in Hollywood. 1967 - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles released the single I Second That Emotion. 1967 - The soundtrack to The Sound Of Music was at No.1 on the UK album chart, spending its 132 week on the chart. The Beatles were at No.2 with Sgt Peppers and Scott Walker was at No.3 with Scott. 1968 - On their farewell tour Cream appeared at The Forum in Los Angeles, California, where live recordings were made which were included on the Goodbye Cream album which was released the following year. 1968 - 18 year old Peter Frampton meet Steve Marriott at a Small Faces show in London. After striking up a friendship, the two started planning a new group which emerged as Humble Pie next April. 1969 - Smith performed their hit Baby Its You on CBS-TVs The Ed Sullivan Show. 1970 - Working from a design he sketched with wife Priscilla, Elvis Presley ordered a dozen 14-karat gold pendants, featuring the letters TCB set around a lightning bolt, as emblems for the Memphis Mafia and also to be used for security purposes. According to Elvis, the symbol stood for Taking Care of Business in a Flash. 1970 - Bob Dylan released his 11th studio album, New Morning. The most commercially successful song on the album, If Not For You, was covered by George Harrison on his All Things Must Pass album and by Olivia Newton-John on her first North American single release. 1970 - The Australian outlaw film Ned Kelly, featuring Mick Jagger in his first starring role, was released to unflattering reviews. One movie critic wrote, He looks about as lethal as last weeks lettuce. 1970 - The musical The Rothschilds, starring Hal Linden, Jill Clayburgh, Keene Curtis, Paul Hecht, Leila Martin, and Robbie Benson, opened at New Yorks Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for 507 performances. 1973 - During their ‘Burnin North American tour, Bob Marley and The Wailers played the first of two nights at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, California. 1973 - David Bowie released his seventh album Pin Ups. The album, which features supermodel Twiggy on the front cover, is a collection of cover versions of some of the singer’s favourite songs, including tracks by Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, The Who, The Yardbirds and The Kinks. 1978 - Actor (Gibbsville, The Rogues, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?, That Touch of Mink, Air Force, The Game of Death, Teachers Pet, Kid Galahad, The Desperate Hours, The Hindenburg, The Killer Elite, Lovers and Other Strangers, Desk Set, Young at Heart, Strange Bedfellows, For Love or Money, The Story on Page One, The Tunnel of Love, City That Never Sleeps, Wake of the Red Witch, The Three Musketeers, Air Force, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Youre In The Army Now) Gig Young committed suicide at age 64. 1979 - Prince released his second studio album, Prince. 1980 - AC/DC kicked off a 20-date UK tour at Bristol Colston Hall. The bands first gigs since the death of singer Bon Scott. 1981 - In Merriville, Indiana at the Holiday Star Theater, Bob Dylan called to the stage his longtime friend Larry Kegan, wheelchair-bound since the age of 15, to perform the Chuck Berry song No Money Down as the nights encore. 1981 - Debbie Harrys was awarded her first post-Blondie gold disc, for her solo LP, Koo Koo. 1985 - A-Ha went to No.1 on the US singles chart with Take On Me, making them the first Norwegian group to score a US No.1. 1985 - Reba McEntire sings the national anthem prior to the first game of the World Series at Royal Stadium in Kansas City. The Cardinals beat the Royals 3-1. 1987 - The first Broadway revival of the musical Anything Goes, starring Patti LuPone, Bill McCutcheon, Howard McGillin, and Larry Cahn, opened at New Yorks Vivian Beaumont Theatre for 784 performances. 1989 - Alan Murphy guitarist with Level 42 died of pneumonia related to aids. Murphy also worked with Kate Bush, Go West and Mike & the Mechanics. 1991, Oasis played The Boardwalk in their hometown Manchester, the groups first gig with Noel Gallagher in the group. 1991 - Grant Turner, WSM-Nashville and Grand Ole Opry announcer for 49 years, died at age 79. 1993 - Pearl Jam released their second studio album, Vs. 1994 - Actress (Alice, The Bugaloos, Monsieur Verdoux, Billy Roses Jumbo, The Big Broadcast of 1938, Hellzapoppin, The Concorde: Airport 79, Keep Em Flying, The Boys from Syracuse, The Farmers Daughter, College Swing, Double or Nothing, Artists & Models, College Holiday, The Big Broadcast of 1937, Rhythm on the Range)/singer (Melancholy Mood backed by the orchestra of her then-husband David Rose)/TV host (The Martha Raye Show) Martha Raye died of pneumonia at the age of 78. 1994 - A section of seating collapsed at Londons Earls Court during a Pink Floyd concert. Over 1000 fans escaped serious injury. 1995 - Jazz cornetist/flautist Don Cherry (not to be confused with the singer/professional golfer or the NHL broadcaster of that name) died of liver failure due to hepatitis at the age of 58. He developed the genre of world fusion music, incorporating influences of Middle Eastern, traditional African, and Indian music into his playing. Is the stepfather to singer’s musicians Neneh Cherry and Eagle-Eye Cherry. 1995 - George Jones & Tammy Wynette perform the only full-fledged Nashville concert of their career, uniting on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House. 1995 - Nirvana were at No.1 on the US album chart with The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah. 1996 - Irish boy band Boyzone scored had their first UK No.1 single with their version of the 1968 Bee Gees song Words. Elvis Presley and Rita Coolidge have both covered the song. 1997 - American guitarist Glen Buxton died from pneumonia aged 49. Member of the Alice Cooper Band, he co-wrote their hits Schools Out and Elected. 1997 - On stage at the Grand Ole Opry, Vince Gill honored John Denver by playing Take Me Home, Country Roads. Denver had been killed in a plane crash one week earlier. 1998 - Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher made a surprise appearance at the launch party of the new London venue Sound Republic. He jammed onstage with Pete Townshend and members from Ocean Colour Scene and Boo Radleys. 1998 - Record producer George Martin, nicknamed the Fifth Beatle, officially retired from the music business. 1998 - Mark Nieto filed a lawsuit against Aerosmith for alleged hearing loss after he attended an Aerosmith concert. 1999 - Capitol releases Keith Urbans self-titled debut album as a solo artist. 2000 - A judge ruled that Robbie Williams had substantially copied lyrics on his song Jesus Was A Camper Van from the 1961 Woody Guthrie song I Am The Way and also used parts of a parody by Loudon Wainwright III. EMI Records had offered 25% royalties but the publishers Ludlow Music were demanding 50%. 2002 - Keith Urban begins a six-week stay at #1 on the Billboard country chart with Somebody Like You 2003 - Magician David Blaine emerged from a clear plastic box that had been suspended by a crane over the banks of the Thames River in London. He survived for 44 days on only water. 2005 - A survey concluded that the average person spent around £21,000 ($42,000) on music during their lives, the figure included the amount spent on Hi-Fi equipment, concerts and CDs. Music enthusiasts were likely to spend more than double that, parting with just over £44,000 ($89,000), in a lifetime, according to the survey conducted by UK company Prudential. 2006 - NBC-TV said it had decided not to show pictures of Madonna mounting a crucifix during a concert special to be aired the following month. 2006 - Keith Urban checks into the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, to cope with a recurrence of substance abuse. In a statement, he says, One can never let ones guard down on recovery, and Im afraid I have. 2007 - Johnny Marr was made a visiting professor of music at the University of Salford in Manchester. The former Smiths guitarist was set to deliver a series of workshops and masterclasses to students on the BA Popular Music and Recording degree. 2008 - Fashion critic (his Ten Worst-Dressed Women list debuted in 1960)/TV personality/former child actor/author Richard Blackwell, known professionally as Mr. Blackwell, died of an infection at age 86. 2009 - A clump of hair believed to have been trimmed from Elvis Presleys head when he joined the US Army in 1958 sold for $15,000 (£9,200) at an auction in Chicago, America. Other items sold belonging to Presley included a shirt which sold for $52,000 (£32,000), a set of concert-used handkerchiefs, $732 (£450) and photos from the reception of Presleys 1967 wedding to Priscilla, sold for nearly $6,000 (£3,700). 2009 - Actor (Crime Story, Dr. No, Viva Zapata!, Detective Story, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, The Night They Raided Minskys, Seize the Day, The Betsy, Journey Into Fear, The Valachi Papers, Bye Bye Braverman, Three Brave Men, The Silver Chalice, Les Miserables, Lawman, Stiletto, The Counterfeit Killer, The Happy Thieves, The Unforgiven) Joseph Wiseman died at age 91. 2010 - In an interview with Britains Radio Times magazine, Elton John described todays songwriters as pretty awful, pop music as uninspiring, and talent shows like American Idol as boring. 2010 - Actor (Father Dowling Mysteries, Murder She Wrote, Happy Days, Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, The Sandy Duncan Show, The Debbie Reynolds Show, Yours Mine and Ours, Gus, The Secret War of Henry Frigg, Divorce American Style, The World of Henry Orient) Tom Bosley died of heart failure while battling lung cancer at 83. 2010 - Boom Boom Brannigan, a popular Albany, New York radio personality (WABY, WPTR) for 50 years died at age 82. 2011 - Scotty McCreery performs The Star-Spangled Banner before game 1 of the World Series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The Cardinals win the opener, 3-2, against the Texas Rangers, partially owned by Charley Pride. 2011 - At the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr Conrad Murray, Dr Steven Shafer testified that it would have been impossible for Michael Jackson to have self-administered a lethal dose of the sedative propofol. He later said of Dr Murrays delay in calling 911: I almost dont know what to say. That is so completely and utterly inexcusable. 2011 - Coldplay released their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto which charted at No.1 in thirty-four countries. In the UK Mylo Xyloto became Coldplays fifth album to debut at No.1 and became the groups third to debut at No.1 on the US Billboard 200. 2012 - Actress Jessica Biel and singer/actor Justin Timberlake wed, the first marriage for both. 2012 - Singer Adele and her businessman boyfriend Simon Konecki welcomed the arrival of a son they named Angelo.
