This Day in Rock... 1943 – Florence Ballard of the Supremes is born in Detroit. 1966 – The Supremes make the studio recording of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” The song tops Chart Toppers’s Hot 100 for two weeks and R&B singles chart for four weeks. 1966 – The Beatles played the first of three concerts at the Nippon Budokan Hall, Japan. The concert was filmed with The Beatles wearing black suits. 1973 – George Harrison knocked Paul McCartney from the top of the US singles chart with ‘Give Me Love, Give Me Peace On Earth’. His second US No.1, a No.8 hit in the UK. 1989 – The surviving Beatles sue for an injunction against Dave Clark, formerly of the Dave Clark Five, banning him from selling copies of the old Ready Steady Go! TV show featuring the Beatles. The case is later settled out of court. 1990 – Pink Floyd headline at the Knebworth Festival in England. 1994 – Virgin Records rushes the Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge into stores early after the album is played on the radio. 1996 – Neil Young premieres his album, “Broken Arrow” via the Internet. The album is slated for release on July 2, two days after its technologically advanced premiere. 1999 – Eric Clapton performs a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden for his Crossroads rehab center in Antigua. His guests include Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, and Bob Dylan. 2001 – Country legend Chet Atkins, one of the most influential and widely recorded instrumentalists ever, dies of cancer at his home in Nashville. He is 77. 2006 – Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett dies aged 60.
