This Morning I was at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery for the Memorial day ceremony and observed an elderly veteran with a white cane (blind cane) carrying a medium sized wreath for placement with the other wreaths, prior to approaching him to offer him some assistance since it was raining he stopped and asked two younger girl scouts where to take the wreath of which they pointed him in the direction, now being closer and hearing the conversation he asked how far since he couldnt see and again they pointed in the direction of the wreaths, I honestly believe they did not realize what the white cane (blind cane) was for so I politely interrupted them and asked them if I could take him to the area to place the wreath of which they readily agreed. I took the elderly gentleman by the hand and slowly guided him to the area helped him place the wreath and as we were walking back to where the girl scouts were, he told me he could only barely see in front of him and thanked me for helping. I left him close to the two girl scouts where he said he would wait with them for his friends to arrive. I thought, how great it was to see this elderly veteran barely able to walk or see proudly arrive in the rain to place a wreath and attend the ceremonies to honor the thousands of fallen soldiers....he is what Memorial day truly is all about.
