This Thanksgiving, as I was 25 years ago, I am Thankful that God lead us to Dr. Kopits and that our Steven is well, healthy, with a lovely wife and great family enjoying Disney World this week. I am thankful to everyone who supported Steven and friends like Jason Nickerson who visited him daily and keep up his sprits. Jason looks good in this picture! November 23 1989, 25 years ago this week St. Joseph’s Hospital, Baltimore. We were in Dr. Kopits office at 10 PM and then went back to our hotel so Steven would be in the ER at 6AM. The great man who had mentored us for over 12 years was now about to operate on Steven’s legs. I give my son credit he was so brave and never complained in the six months of this ordeal. In reality the doctor broke his legs and rebuilt them. He did other things so that he would be able to function well in life without pain and difficulty. He invented this surgery. Steven went into he OR at 6AM. At 4PM Dr. Kopits came out and assured us that all was fine and he was leaving for Canada but not to worry. I stayed in Stevens’s room. Around 3AM when Dr. Kopits returned from his trip, without going home and already up over 20 hours, to check on Steve. Have you ever thought in your entire life who was the best person you ever met? If I could pick one great man in my lifetime it would be Dr. Steven Kpoits , Johns Hopkins Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital . His story should be a book or a movie. Sadly he passed away too young. He inspired our entire family and changed peoples lives around the world in ways that are hard to imagine.
