This article touches on so many painful subjects that so many of us dont want to think about. I wonder how many -- not all, but many -- students in our district would manage if they went to a school system without sufficient books, crumbling infrastructure, etc. Would they understand that the smart kids have to work to help pay for luxuries like food and do not have the freedom to have tutors whenever they need help? Even within our county, there is a great divide between the haves and the kids who do not have and would never imagine asking their parents. I understand people are free to make choice about how to spend their money. I do wish that all students at least had the same basic opportunities -- access to computers, tutors if necessary, and freedom from having to work. Oops, time to get off my soap box!
