This break from light and fun brought to you by Important Information You May Need To Share (or have, for that matter). Domestic Violence has come up a couple times very recently. As much as we wish people understood there is no just in just leave, there are some important steps to take and things to be aware of. Step one: Get all your important papers gathered (out of the house if possible) ahead of time. Bank/credit card info, birth certificates, social security cards, mortgage/leave agreements, anything youve had to sign or that establishes who you are, gather it together. Get your kids info too, including any school or medical records you have. Step two: Have a safe place to go which does NOT involve any family or friends your partner knows or can find. Preferably a shelter, where security is already in place and the staff know how to help everyone keep themselves safe. Step three: Arrange a safe way to get there. Be aware of GPS in your car and the potential for that to be used to locate you. Be aware: The time an abuser is MOST dangerous is right after you leave. Be aware: A protection order can impose legal penalties for its violation, but it will not stop or prevent an attack. If youre not comfortable divulging your location (so your partner knows where not to go) dont get one. There are national resources as well as local. There are people who can help you plan, who can help you think of things that wouldnt have occurred to you. Be aware of your tech tracks, but be aware that theyre out there.
