This contribution is a reply to Mahmoods article posted by Nasir El-Rufai on face book making the case for why Buhari should be elected instead of Jonathan. Mahmood asserted in his article that Buharis victory will take Nigeria to its glory days. My question to Mahmood is; When did Nigeria ever had any glory days or years that Jonathan lost since the civil war ended in 1970?. All facts and figures showed that Nigeria has always been run by plunderers, thieves, embezzlers, liars and incompetent leaders started from Yakubu Gowon, Muritala Mohamed, Ousegun Obasanjo (1st comming), Shehu Shagari, Buhari (1st coming). Ibrahim Babangida (Self proclaimed evil genious), Shonekan, Abacha, Abdul Salami, Oushegun Obasanjo (2nd coming), Yaradua and now Jonathan. Most of the leaders have been northerners and they were crooks and criminals that looted or encouraged the looting of the countrys treasury. Though one of the past leaders, Shehu Shagari may not have looted the treasury directly like the rest of them but he encouraged Umaru Dikko as his henchman to loot the treasury. Muritala was a better person than the rest of them and may not be accused of stealing from the country. He was a true nationalist. The three southerners that occupied the presidency equally are looters of the treasury. Therefore Nigerian leaders from both North and South are looters and I do not know where Mahmood got the lost glory days or years that Nigeria lost due to Jonathans presidency. Since 1970, Nigeria has never had any glory days or years as a nation. No glory days or years under Northern leadership nor under Southern leadership. Therefore, blaming Jonathan solely for Nigerias problem is wrong because in the last 44yrs from 1970 to 2014, the North ruled for 27 years and the south for 17 yrs. There were no glory days or years for 27yrs under northern leadership and for 17 years under southern leadership, we had no glory days or years. Therefore, we need new blood from the North or South and not Buhari to lead the nation. He has taken his turn and did not perform. Like Obasanjo who took his turn as a military head of state and he did not perform instead he rigged election un-behalf of NPN. Buhari will follow Obasanjos footsteps and he is deemed to fail as well. They are cut from the same cloth because they came out of the same weak, inefficient and corrupt Nigerian military system, The military system in Nigeria institutionalized corruption in the country and most of them from that old generation are spent and they need to give way to the younger generation. Jonathan is from the younger generation but he is following the play book of the older generation because members of that generation put him in office. Since Buhari from the old generation that despises democratic ethos like Obasanjo is the one running against Jonathan, it is my opinion that we support Jonathan for re-election and force him through industrial actions and heavy handed criticisms to force him to change direction and bring in professionals that can develop and implement policies including economic policies that can help bring sanity to the system and dethrone corruption. At 72, Buhari is too old to lead the change and transformation that we need at this time. Though Jonathan had not performed very well in the last six years because he has been held hostage by a group of cabals that included some of his ministers, but I believe that he has a better chance to lead the required change than Buhari if he has a better group of advisers around him.
