This country is founded in protest. The original Tea Party was an act of civil disobedience. The phrase Civil Disobedience was later coined by American philosopher Henry David Thoreau in his landmark essay of the same name. Womans suffrage was won via protest. Labor rights in this country, like the 8 hour day, the five day work week and so forth were all also achieved via protest in the face of violent suppression from both our government and business. The Civil Rights movement, though still incomplete, defeated Jim Crow and accomplished a measure of equity under the law via protest. Heck, even the Prince of Peace, whose birth most Americans have just celebrated, was known to cause a righteous public ruckus when facing injustice. The idea that a polite request is the best path to justice is absurd. The general rule of power and authority is stasis, if not regression, which is what he have witnessed over the last 35 years of slow motion revolution in reverse. People opposed to the growing #BlackLivesMatter protest movement stand in opposition to a proud and crucial American tradition. If you dont understand why people are on the street, or think they are being foolish or destructive or lazy, you might want to consider your own ignorance, and not their intention. They are putting their bodies on the line, doing what most of us cannot or will not do, demanding equity under the law. I show my support with these postings as well as the occasional participation in a protest, when I think the police are likely to remain peaceful, and where mass arrests seem unlikely. It appears that this #MillionsMarchLA event on Saturday should be just such an occasion. Im gathering friends and families to make some flavorful signs, walk and chant for justice full heart, and enjoy a collective moment of sweet Shabbat soul. See you at Pan Pacific Park!
