This describes a lot of my first year at Olin, from the classmates who started dismissing every new and confusing engineering concept as trivial from day one to the friends who had an innate ability to finish problem sets in a single sitting while Id spend multiple nights and still get everything wrong. My tipping point was realizing that after people get over their inherent tendency to brag about knowing something, most people dont think about knowledge gaps. If youre in the right environment, surrounded by the right people, theyre happy to spend an extra six hours doing that physics problem set and helping you understand things - once you ask. Weve all been helped and help at different points, because the act of teaching is the most satisfying and effective method of learning. It doesnt make asking for help any easier, but each time it works, you feel a little better the next time.
