This essay oversimplifies things considerably--it identifies one angle of attack on the education system, anyway--but its still useful. If you dont work toward a classically educated populace with the comfort level to not be susceptible to panic and fear, broad and comprehensive access to disinterested reporting as well as bare facts, and the time and means to participate actively in civil issues, then you work against America. That may sound harsh, but there it is. Those are the assumptions that our country was founded on. One thing the article only mentions in passing is that education is becoming increasingly vocational. I have long hated the bias against vocational education. Now that we have finally admitted that there is not only no mind/body dichotomy but in fact an active and constructive relationship between the brain and various parts of the body--notably the hands--I would like that applied to any attempt to enrich the life of the mind. But I dont want to see it at the expense of classical education, and I certainly dont want to see the whole institution bent toward the narrow problem of minting acceptable corporate employees. We are still tasked with building of each student a shining city on a hill, or we should just pack the whole thing up and become part of England again.
