This following is part of an article appearing in Australian Mining miningaustralia.au/author/malavika%20santhebennur Justice Preston rejected the mine because of “the significant, diverse biological adversity, noise and dust and social impacts of the project”. Justice Preston also said the mine “would exacerbate the sense of loss of place, and materially and adversely change the sense of community of the residents of Bulga and the surrounding countryside”. Then highlight that Warkworth Mine proposed 24/7 operations 2.6 km from Bulga. Coalpac propose 24/7 operations just 0.5 km form Cullen Bullen ie. more than 5 times closer. Then highlight that only other town in NSW where open-cut mining occurs within 500 metres of a residential village is Camberwell in the Hunter Valley, where the Ashton Coal Mine has open-cuts to within 400 metres of that village. However the vast majority (49) of the 56 residences in Camberwell have been purchased by Ashton Coal. Even so, to protect residents of Camberwell, open cut mining operations are restricted to day and evening periods only, and blasts are limited to 1 a day, 5 per week.
