This happened few weeks back. Those who know my cousins son will know how noughty he is. With him around, the air will be full of buzz. So it was shocking to see him weeping uncontrolably. I looked at my cousin angrily and asked if he had beaten him. No was the nod of head and a crisp reply came back, you yourself ask him. I looked at the weeping and boy enquired, what happened. In comes reply amidst weeping, Chithappa, I want to convert to SC / ST. Now I got the problem, which you can feel only when you are a brahmin living in Tamilnadu. My cousins son, who is going to write 10th standard exam, used to get marks in 80 to 90 range. A very poor mark, considering that you are required to score above 98 to secure a seat you want. That is, if only you are a brahmin or unfortunate to be other OC in Tamilnadu. After enquiry my counsins son releals and complained how his friends in other categories are content with 60 to 70 range of marks and the poor himself has been forced and forced to study more. This is very complex. My daughter too was shattered to learn in her 12th standard exams, how some of her close frineds in other categories are happy with excellent marks of 70 % and how we are forced to run around with very poor marks of more than 90 %. How in the world, you will justify to a poor 10th standard boy, he needs to score more than 98 %, just because he happens to be a Brahmin in Tamilnadu. I had a terrific time consoling him and make him feel good. But it left my with questions, why cant we make reservation based on economic criteria alone. And why there shold be different grades for different set of people. But one thing is certain. These things can only make us more harder and more smarter.
