This image is sadly all to common in households across Canada ... young children painfully stressing over worksheets :( When you reflect back on your own education do you even remember all the things you had to memorize for tests in order to pass them or the info contained in all the nights of homework you slaved over rote writing spelling / math or what not? Honestly if you gave me a test in geography or history or science any of the other required textbook learning in elementary and high school I would FAIL despite the fact I was an A+ student cause I can memorize when needed to for a short term ... I have taken and passed 3 college level French courses in an effort to become Bilingual but reality is I still cannot speak more than a dozen words in French from memory now cause like anything in live if I do not use it I loose it cause my brain only has so much room to retain important info and what is important is what I am passionate about and USE in my daily life and because they did not teach us how to use it in real life but just to memorize the words for tests it did not give me a frame of mind to form pathways TO retain it! Sadly in our public education system we typically do not empower our children to ACQUIRE/RETAIN knowledge through hands on learning about things they will USE in life but rather memorize useless facts to get the grade and than the info gets pushed out and forgotten .... what a WASTE OF CHILDHOOD and the stress turns so many people off of the LEARNING process and therefore negatively impacts them for life :( It is time to return to empowering our children to inquire, to investigate, research, explore and therefore to ACQUIRE the ability TO LEARN again so that they can problem solve, think creatively, reflect on what worked and did not work ... we need to toss the worksheets and homework and allow children to explore their education through hands on explorations of topics of interest to them!
