This is a 1971 recording of Baldrys on-stage talking about his street performer days in London in the mid-50s. Long John Baldry was Britains King of Rock N Roll long before the British Invasion of 64-65. At various times, Baldrys had, as back-up, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Rod Stewart, Julie Driscoll, Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, Brian Auger, and Brian Jones -- many of whom he discovered. Somewhere on the internet theres TV footage of Baldry (clean-cut in a tie and suit) singing an R&B song with, well, EVERYBODY singing back-up - including in the background the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. His bands included Steampacket (Baldry-Stewart-Driscoll-Auger) allof whom went on to big solo careers in the UK (and, to a lesser extent, in the US). Like virtually all of the great British rock N Roll acts of the early 60s, Baldry was inspired by American black Rythym N Blues music. Many of the great hits of the British Invasion were covers of songs by virtually unknown American black singers and groups.
