This is a Tribute to my late husband Dr. John Jay Barfield 111. John worked for years on efforts to honor Dr. King. As a Baptist Pastor in New York, he organized an ecumenical memorial each year for Dr. Kings Birthday, our first speaker was Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, co-leader of SCLC with Dr. King and was always at his side. Ralphs sermon was entitled :you can kill the dreamer but you cannot kill the dream the text was the story of Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers. The second year our speaker was Daddy King who stayed at our home with us and I was able to cook for him and pamper him. The third year we had ADs oldest son Derick as our speaker. John attended Dr. Kings funeral and always stayed true to the struggle. All of John Barfields children should be proud of his commitment to positive change.
