This is a calling to all of our Puerto Rican brothers, & sisters - TopicsExpress

This is a calling to all of our Puerto Rican brothers, & sisters who live outside of Puerto Rico to get more invoved in your communities. Gentrification has hit an all time low. Not only are they pushing us out by raising our rents to the point that we cant afford to live in our neighborhoods anymore, but now they want to erase any history of us being there in the first place. They have tried it in El Barrio, when years ago, they tried to remove the name, Luis Muñoz Marin Blvd. The Puerto Rican community there, showed that they were still very much present, & fought hard to keep that from happening. The attempt to remove the name failed. They have tried the same thing in the Lower East Side, by trying to remove the name Loisaida. They failed there as well. Now they are trying to change the Name Avenue of Puerto Rico from Graham Avenue in Brooklyn. These developers are so bold, that they dont even try to hide their racism. They claim that there is nothing Puerto Rican there, & keeping that name is not good for business. You know, cause we are such terrible people. They have stooped so low, that they took up petitions, & went to people of other Latino backrounds. Mexicans, Salvadoreans, Dominicans, & so forth, & tried to get them to sign so that the name Avenue of Puerto Rico get removed. All I can say to those who considered signing the pettition is, today its our community, tomorrow its yours. The funny thing is, that I visited Graham avenue recently. The Cuchifritos still there, & I still see many Puerto Rican people in the area. While many of our people have been force out of their neighborhoods, many are still there. These racist morons dont want to aknowledge our presence. We dont exist but yet we have the biggest parade in the city. What makes me angry is seeing the very same white politicians supporting gentrification, marching in our parade wearing guayaberas, like thats supposed to impress us. I feel that the organizers of the Puerto Rican Parade, should take up another role. Rather than just organize a parade every year, they should actively represent, & get involved in issues that concern the Puerto Rican community. We also need to be more invoved in what happens in our communities. We need to go to Community Board meetings, & show a strong presence. We need to look at these racist developers, in their eyes & show them that we are a force to be reckoned with, & they are not going to get rid of us that easy. We need to let our Boricua elected officials know, that being Boricua, is not enough to get elected. If they want our votes, well they better represent us well, & get involved in our struggles. While Im referring to events affecting the Puerto Rican community in NYC, the same thing is happening in Puerto Rican communities nation wide. It is time for all of the Boricuas nation wide, to stand up, & defend whats theirs. Dont let the hard work of our Puerto Rican brothers, & sisters, who paved the way for us, be in vain. Despierta Boricua Defiende Lo Tuyo!!!
