This is a great, must-see event celebrating 20 years of Julie Gallegos fabulous Viva Arizona shows. But it also honors a man who has been my friend and mentor, Ralph Gonzalez. Julie and Ralph are the people who inspired me to do both the kind of writing I did at the Tucson Citizen, and the documentary work Ive done since it ceased publication. Many of you will remember Julies Viva Arizona shows that tell Tucsons Mexican American history so beautifully, movingly and with such clarity through dance. You really dont know this city until you see Viva Arizona. Ralph researched and wrote the narration for those shows which for many like myself opened our eyes to the old ballrooms, the pioneers of Mexican radio and so much more. There are few if any people in this city for whom I have greater respect and from whom I have learned more from about my city, and life in general, than Ralph. Its been a few years since Julie has put Viva Arizona on the stage. This is a special occasion to say the least, and the perfect show for El Casino Ballroom. Please join me in catching a great show and honoring these special friends to all of us who have come to love this city just a little more because of the inspiring things they do.
