This is a link to the famous graph of the French engineer Charles Joseph Minard (1781-1870) showing the fate of Napoleons army in Russia. The original size of the army (422,000 men) is shown as the thick band on the left. The width of the band shows the size of the army at each place on the map. The army had 100,000 men when it reached Moscow. The lower gray band (black if you drag the button) shows the size of the army during the retreat. The decrease in the size of the army is correlated with the falling temperature, shown at the bottom of the graph. The disaster of the crossing of the Berezina River is depicted as a dramatic change in line width. Only 10,000 men remained in the army when it finally arrived back in Poland. According to Edward R. Tufte, author of The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, this may well be the best statistical graphic ever drawn. Im using this to introduce the graph I drew of a less important historical event which I will show in my next post. masswerk.at/minard/
